The Lions Club of Madras East Medical Centre was established in 1970 with the vision of providing accessible healthcare to the underserved community of Injambakkam, a small village that, at the time, lacked basic medical facilities. Originally located in a building owned by the local Village Panchayat, the center began with a general physicians’ clinic and a free dispensary to address the immediate health needs of the villagers.
At that time, Injambakkam was a hamlet with very few resources, and the local panchayat, recognizing the need for healthcare infrastructure, generously allocated a piece of land where the current medical center stands. Responding to requests from the community, the Lions Club expanded its services by opening a maternity center, which over time has helped deliver approximately 400 children.
In the early years, the Lions Club of Madras East also supported a boarding home for physically challenged girls in collaboration with the Niveditha Charitable Trust. During the 1990s, a partnership was formed with Voluntary Health Services to further strengthen the outreach and impact of the center’s services. By 2010, the center made a trategic decision to expand its scope of medical care, introducing a physiotherapy unit, followed by a diagnostic lab to offer essential healthcare services to a broader range of patients.
A significant milestone came in 2020 when the center entered into a collaboration with Thyrocare a leading diagnostic services provider, to offer advanced diagnostic testing, further enhancing the center’s capabilities. In 2018, during the Golden Jubilee celebrations, the Lions Club also inaugurated a dental clinic, marking a new chapter in its comprehensive healthcare offerings.
In 2022, the center continued to expand its services with the introduction of diagnostic imaging, including X-ray, ultrasound scans, ECGs, and specialized services in general medicine, eye care, and more. The inauguration of these new services was graced by the Hon’ble Tamil Nadu Health and Family Welfare Minister, Mr. Ma. Subramanian. Furthermore, the center added specialized clinics in gynecology, orthopedics, pediatrics, and eye care, making it a multi-specialty facility catering to a wide array of healthcare needs
The Lions Club of Madras East Medical Centre is committed to its mission of delivering “Quality Service at an Affordable Rate”, making essential healthcare services accessible to the local community. In addition to regular healthcare services, the center organizes frequent health camps, offering free consultations and medical screenings to both the local population and neighboring areas. Blood donation camps are also held in partnership with the Lions Blood Bank, ensuring a steady supply of blood for critical emergencies.
On average, the medical center serves over 600 individuals every month, with more than 15,000 people benefiting from its services over the past two years alone. This is a testament to the enduring impact of the Lions Club’s vision of service to the community.
In summary, the Lions Club of Madras East Medical Centre has grown from a small clinic into a comprehensive healthcare facility, continuously adapting to the changing needs of the community and providing critical services that have touched thousands of lives over the years.
